Hi, I’m Elise Thompson, the designer behind Mejia Jewelry.
One of my favorite pieces I’ve ever created is the Crying Eye Necklace.
It’s a piece that feels like a story. One that ties together childhood memories, art, and family.
The eye is made of inlaid agate, white, black, and blue; colors that feel calm yet alive.
And the tear, a blue sapphire, once part of a vintage piece, now given new life set in gold.
My fascination with eyes began when I was little.
My uncle was an eye doctor, and in his home were artworks of eyes.
One in particular, a large, open eye floating over a desert, always drew me in.
It reminded me of Salvador Dalí’s surrealist worlds, where the eye becomes a portal to imagination, emotion, and awareness.
The golden eyebrow came later, its texture inspired by the armor of a seahorse, a detail that’s become part of my signature style.
While sculpting wax one day, the curve of a crescent moon naturally became the perfect brow.
And so, the Crying Eye was born, a golden brow, a gemstone gaze, and a sapphire tear.
The eye also carries another layer of meaning.
Growing up in an Italian household, I was surrounded by superstitions. We wore little horns or eye charms to protect against malocchio, the evil eye.
That tradition of protection and belief in the power of symbols stayed with me.
So in this necklace, the eye isn’t just watching; it’s guarding, feeling, and reflecting.
To me, it’s a reminder to look deeper. To see beyond what’s right in front of us.
And if you ever feel sadness or longing, maybe this necklace can cry for you or with you. Thank you.
