Barton studied Menswear Design at FIT and built a career in the fashion world before making an unexpected—but deeply fulfilling—pivot into jewelry. He found the methodical rhythm of wax carving and metalwork to be not only creative, but deeply meditative.

“Jewelry has been an obsession of mine for as long as I can remember. I grew up admiring my grandmother’s and mother’s jewelry, fascinated by the colors, shapes, and intricate designs—especially those of Italian jewelry. The way Renaissance painters captured jewelry with painterly strokes romanticized it in a way that made me want to create my own world of adornment.
✨
In college, I studied Renaissance painting, and I try to visit as many museums as possible to glimpse the grandeur of historical jewelry design.
✨
My love of craft was shaped by my grandmother and great-aunt, who could create anything—from couture dresses to crocheted blankets and Barbie clothes. They were resourceful, saving fabric scraps, lace, and trimmings, and I still have pieces from their dressmaking days. That sense of artistry and craftsmanship continues to inspire me.
✨
I also find endless inspiration in nature. Growing up near the Atlantic Ocean, I spent countless hours collecting shells, twigs, and bits of the shoreline—textures and organic forms that now weave their way into my designs.

My deep love for gemstones led me to become a GIA graduate gemologist, and I’ve been working with gemstones for over 20 years. My jewelry reflects all of these influences—history, art, craft, nature, and the ever-alluring world of gemstones.” - Elise Thompson, Mejia Jewelry
